TCC's "AI Co-Learning & Empowerment Project": Navigating Transition with Tribal Residents

Since November 2025, the introduction of AI autonomous electric mining trucks at TCC's 1,000-meter-high Hoping quarry has fundamentally reshaped local jobs. Senior drivers are stepping away from the steering wheel, transitioning into intelligent operators or mastering new equipment. 

To help the surrounding tribes navigate this shift, TCC launched the "AI Co-Learning & Empowerment Project." Targeting schools and neighborhoods near the plants, the initiative features a three-stage curriculum—"Literacy Building, Technology Experience, and Industry in Action "—to introduce AI through everyday applications before bringing residents to the AI smart quarry to see the future of work in action.

Taking Root: From Tech Experiences to Career Imaginations

The project debuted at He-Ping and Dong'ao Elementary Schools, where students and teachers explored generative AI, operated drones, and visited the smart quarry. The technology immediately resonated. "I used to think AI was something so far away from me," shared a He-Ping Elementary School student. "I never expected that just by speaking a few words to it, it would draw a little tern from Hoping Port for me! It turns out AI can be my helper!"

The hands-on learning continued with drone sessions creatively designed as interactive soccer matches. At Dong'ao Elementary School, teachers noticed that students who usually held back in class showed remarkable focus when handling drone controllers. Later, visiting the quarry's control room as "reporters," these students watched as traditional outdoor driving was replaced was replaced by remote digital dispatching. For many children whose parents work at the plant t, this offered a powerful glimpse into their hometown's evolving industry.

Deepening Community Engagement: Making AI a Practical Tool 

The initiative subsequently expanded into Heping and Aohua Villages, offering practical courses like "AI as a Helper" and "AI as an Assistant," alongside drone flights and AI Smart Quarry tours. In a true display of community inclusion, college students, young professionals, and tribal elders learned side by side.

The lessons focused on real-life utility: using smartphone AI to design posters, translate in real time, and generate professional presentations. To build digital resilience, the course also tackled information security and AI scam prevention.

Residents quickly applied these new skills. The Heping Village chief used mobile AI to design a typhoon prevention poster, while an Aohua Elementary School teacher generated diverse presentations for health campaigns. Ms. Lee, a local contractor, even borrowed her child's laptop to complete a "high-temperature heat treatment" occupational safety presentation, saving hours of manual work.
The technology also sparked new ideas; during a drone class, the Aohua Village chief suggested using drones to safely assess hard-to-reach areas during natural disasters.

Inside the Hoping quarry control room, residents learned about this transition from familiar faces. Mr. Tian, a senior driver now dispatching AI autonomous electric mining trucks, shared his initial anxieties. He worried so much about making configuration errors that his daughter remarked, "I've never seen Dad working so seriously." Today, both he and senior colleague Mr. Song thrive in their new AI smart quarry roles. Hearing their stories transformed AI from abstract concept into a tangible, achievable reality for the community.

Corporate Transition Inspires Local Co-Learning

Ultimately, TCC's "AI Co-Learning & Empowerment Project" goes beyond a simple tech demonstration. It actively turns AI-driven industrial upgrade into a platform for the community to master new tools and understand future careers. 

Moving forward, TCC will continue providing learning resources, working alongside tribal residents to confidently navigate the new challenges and opportunities of the digital transition.
